Athletes Needed-apply at your local gymnasium. Do you have what it takes to represent Athens at the Great games at Olympia? Might you win an Olympic crown? The ancient Greeks believed in training the mind and body together, so once you start your training you'll study grammar, music, citizenship, and philosophy. At the same time, you'll be expected to develop all of your athletic skills: boxing, running, wrestling, the long jump, and the Pentathlon. If you qualify, you might participate in the City Games. When you're not competing you may watch chariot races, armed dancing performed with weapons, and armed racing done while carrying a shield. There is a torch relay race, too. Once every four years the Olympic Games takes place. If you're good enough, you'll join athletes from all over the Greek world for a month of special training. Athletes must work hard-there is no second or third place. Only the olive crown, first prize, matters. Finally, you must be ready to answer questions during your job interview at the end of the book. If you answer most of the questions right, you'll get the job of Greek Athlete and begin your journey toward Olympic glory!
